Jasper In January
Winter is one of the best times to explore Canada. Every January, Jasper hosts a 3 week long event called "Jasper In January" featuring more fun activities than I could possibly list. Below are some of our favourite activities we did during last year’s festival.
For 2019, the festival takes place January 10th-27th.
Dog sledding in the Canadian Rockies sounds like a dream come true right? Jasper In January offers a small taste of what a full dogsled tour would be like. Relax in the warm sled or stand on the back to get the full experience. Dogsled tours are offered through Cold Fire Creek Dog Sledding .
Activity Level: Light
Fun Factor: (In Gaia's words) AWESOME!
2. Outdoor Skating
Available all winter long, there are actually two stunning locations for outdoor skating. Pyramid Lake (pictured) and Jasper Park Lodge. Don't forget to follow up your true Canadian experience with some Hot Chocolate (or even better, poutine).
3. Maligne Canyon Icewalk
The beauty of Maligne Canyone truly comes out during the winter months. Walk among natural ice formations and take in the raw beauty of this winter wonderland. There are three different tour companies offering safe walks among the canyon- Sun Dog Tours, Jasper Hikes & Tours Inc, and Maligne Adventures.
4. Hit the Slopes
Whether you are an expert or a novice, January is a great time to hit the slopes. With $20 off lift tickets, you won’t feel so bad if you end up using pow time for a second coffee in the chalet.
4. whiskey, wine, & Hops festival
This adults-only event draws in quite the crowd. Featuring breweries from the surrounding areas, different wines, scotches, etc, it's certainly a fun event not to be missed- and tickets tend to sell out early, so make sure to purchase them in advance. There is a delicious assortment of appetizers and desserts to compliment the drinks. I had never tried chicken and waffles before, but after a mere taste at Hops N' Scotch, I now see what all the fuss is about.
5. Street Party
A fantastic time for families. Casually wander around this free outdoor event enjoying the street performers, live music, and tasty treats. I would highly recommend dressing warm (I sported a full snowsuit). Hot packs may become your best friend and can be purchased right across from the cotton candy and mini donut stand (yum!).
Round off the street party with a gorgeous display of fireworks just minutes away from where all the action is. My daughter had so much fun this day last year, that she fell asleep while I piggybacked her between the live music and firework display. She woke up just in time for the brilliant show.
January is always an exciting time to visit Jasper, and there is endless amounts of fun to be had. See the official Jasper Tourism site for more information.
