New Year, New Who?
I went away for Christmas and came home to a new gym. Well, not actually. In truth, it’s the same gym, but there has been a swell of eager faces within its perfect white walls.
I walk into the yoga room that I frequent several times a week and see new bodies laid out over my favourite spot. Maybe at a different point in my life, I would have joined the bandwagon of people cursing the newbies for taking over “our space”, “our equipment”, and “our instructors”. But who can blame someone for trying to better themself? We all started somewhere, and just because we are more vigilant with our exercise regime, or have been doing it longer, doesn’t mean our gym owes us anything.
One of my favourite attributes about any gym is the energy that is created from all of the different people in the room. A certain pride and excitement rises within me, and I feel compelled to push myself harder.
So with that knowledge, I warmly welcome the newcomers.
I’ve never been one for setting New Year Resolutions. I find myself continuously setting goals throughout the year, but since I want to keep seeing all of these smiling new faces completing their goals, I’ve compiled a list of things that help me smash mine.
1. Set attainable goals.
Maybe you are the type who need to quit smoking cold turkey, or maybe you are the type who needs to slowly wean yourself off. Find what works best for you and map it out.
2. Don’t be afraid to grow into your goals.
Want to hit the gym and gain some muscle? I hate to break it to you, but if your goal is to go from not going to the gym at all to 6 days a week starting January 1st, you may be surprised when day 3 rolls around and you can’t get out of bed… It can be difficult to go from zero to hero, there is no shame in starting at 1.
3. Write your goals down.
Constantly being exposed to visual reminders can be helpful, as is goal mapping, vision boards, whatever makes you feel empowered. I personally like lists because I love crossing things off.
4. Don’t be discouraged if you falter.
I aim to attend yoga classes for 5 hours a week. Sometimes I do more, but I try to do no less than 3. While my goal is 5, I don’t beat myself up if I don’t reach it. Life is busy. By setting a weekly goal, it resets every 7 days, and I have a new chance to achieve it.
5. Don’t wait for New Years to kick dirty habits
Every minute, every hour, every day is a new chance. The best time to start was yesterday, the second best time is now.
